by now, any christian with an email should have received that warning message about the new movie, the golden compass
which is based on a trilogy of books
and me, being the skeptic I am, decided to actually do some reading up about it
and yes, I do firmly believe that it goes against christian beliefs
come on!
for one, the name of the trilogy
'His Dark Materials'
any bells ringing?
fine, maybe not
'One defining aspect of the story is his concept of dæmons.'that should ring more bells
dæmons = demons
just a fancier name
the main plot of the story revolves around two 12 year old children fulfilling a prophecy to be 'the next adam and eve' and destroy 'The Authority' which is the story's version of 'God'
I'm sure some of us have already seen the trailer for the film, and it talks about the girl who goes against the Magisterium, which apparently controls most of the western world. This Magisterium is the story's version of the church.
One of the characters, Mary Malone, a former nun, states that
'the Christian religion…is a very powerful and convincing mistake, that's all.'The book also portrays the christian heaven as a lie, the real afterlife is depicted as a bleak place where souls are tormented by harpies.
Although the book's author, Philip Pullman, has denied that his books are an opposite to CS Lewis', he has dismissed Lewis as "blatantly racist" and "monumentally disparaging of women."
Knowing what other skeptics will say, I am merely laying out facts for you to see.
But no, I will not watch this movie, and I'm encouraging other christians not to either.
wow, I feel better
ranting about bad movie works!
call me a zealot
